Plan of improvement Rijnwaalpad Arnhem

What?

The RijnWaalpad is the bicycle highway between Arnhem and Nijmegen. It’s the backbone of the regional cycling network. Knowing that the ambition and need is to entice more people from the city or region to use the bicycle or e-bike, it requires an improvement of the entire cycle route. New Urban Mobility was asked to review the route and make a plan of improvement.

How?

The entire route has been examined for cycling friendliness and fast cycle route quality. Based on the five requirements for a good cycle route: Directness, Safety, Comfort, Coherence, and Attractiveness. Improvement proposals have been made or recommendations for follow-up study. When we started doing research on these topics on the street by cycling along the route, we saw some obvious improvements. On the other hand, a few intersections were complex and required a traffic count or follow-up study. In that case, possible measures would have consequences for the car traffic or bus traffic (longer cycle times or other traffic circulation). Finally, concrete measures and study projects have been prioritized based on management and maintenance programs and linkage opportunities.

Result

As a result of the improvement plan, the first measures have been implemented or are in preparation, and follow-up studies have been carried out.
