Kruitmolen intersection

What?

The Molenzoom/Kruitmolen intersection in Houten has been a topic of discussion since its reconstruction in 2013. Every year, many people are complaining about road (un)safety. Conflicts often arise between cyclists and turning motorists.

How?

Based on accident analyses, observations, and interviews with those involved (VVN, Police, Cyclists’ Union), New Urban Mobility made a broad analysis. The location is mainly perceived as unsafe due to the many criss-cross movements that cyclists use and the combination of cycle path and zebra. This makes it difficult for motorists to see when they can start driving.

Since the point is mainly perceived as unsafe due to cycling behavior, a challenge has been organized. The aim was threefold: at first, gathering a lot of attention for this location among the residents (they are sometimes cyclists and sometimes motorists), awareness that it’s hard to solve the problem by changing the infrastructure, and at last, gauging support for a solution.

Result

Lots of publicity and 180 participants. New insight, support for a specific solution, and positive reactions that the municipality takes the reports seriously. By adding greenery, cyclists are pleasantly forced not to cut corners. Extra marking guides cyclists to the center of the cycle path and gives motorists extra awareness.
