Bicycle incentive projects in smaller municipalities

What?

Implementing successful bicycle incentive projects in smaller municipalities is difficult. Engineers are not equipped for this (new) task and the result of an intervention is not visible immediately in the increase in the number of cyclists.

The province of Overijssel made it mandatory to implement a bicycle incentive measure when applying for a subsidy for cycling infrastructure. Linking a bicycle incentive action at the moment of changing the infrastructure is a promising combination. As a bicycle agent, New Urban Mobility has helped the municipalities to carry out this new task.

How?

To support municipalities in bicycle incentive campaigns, communication material has been developed and five common example behavioral interventions have been drawn up with a step-by-step plan, script, and possible actions and communication expressions.

The products have been developed in close collaboration with municipalities. The wishes and preconditions were inventoried based on a digital survey among traffic engineers and communications staff. Choices were then made in three sessions for the visual style of Twente Fietst! and for the examples to be developed.

Result

Municipalities will start using the materials from 2024. This is deliberately a dynamic product in which municipalities are meant to learn from each other. As soon as a municipality has implemented an additional icon or successful intervention, this inspiration kit will be supplemented with new examples. The bicycle agent will take charge of this task for the time being.
